A Different Approach: Functional Patterns®

Syracuse Biomechanics is built on the Functional Patterns methodology — a system founded in 2006 by Naudi Aguilar that trains the human body around how it actually evolved to move.

Conventional fitness trains muscles in isolation. Functional Patterns trains movement: the integrated, whole-body patterns your body relies on to walk, stand, run, and stay pain-free in daily life.

Most modern aches — back pain, hip pain, neck tension, knee issues — aren't random. They're the downstream cost of inefficient gait, posture, and breathing patterns built up over years of sitting, screen time, and repetitive movement. FP works by retraining those underlying patterns from the ground up.

Coaching focuses on the FP Big 4 — Standing, Walking, Running, and Throwing — the four foundational human movements. When those work properly, almost everything else in your body starts working better too.

What Brought Me to Functional Patterns

I am a certified Human Biomechanics Specialist with Functional Patterns (Level 2 / HBS2). What brought me to Functional Patterns training was physical pain.

Verify HBS2 certification on functionalpatterns.app Viktor Nikolovski — Human Biomechanics Specialist Level 2 certification, valid through 2028

During a long mountain hike at age 32, intense pain in my back and ankle left me feeling scared about whether I could sustain the movement activities I held dear. As I grew to understand this training system, it was both strangely familiar and unlike any other training I'd experienced.

At the age of 36, my devotion to this training has helped me move better than I ever have. The principles and process of FP have helped me resolve lower back, ankle, and debilitating knee pain to the point that I can now sprint without pain at all.

I have worked with individuals ranging from the ages of 9 to 82. If you have chronic physical pains and are looking for a solution, I have the patience, knowledge, and precision to help you train your body, slowly, step-by-step, in a direction of sustainable and pain-free movement.

Coaching for Every Body

Functional Patterns is built around how the human body actually evolved to move — which makes it particularly well-suited to clients whose bodies don't always fit conventional training models.

Viktor welcomes clients with autism, Kabuki syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other disabilities. Sessions are paced and adapted to the individual, with accommodations built into the standard approach rather than treated as an afterthought. If you're not sure whether this is right for you or a family member, reach out — Viktor's happy to talk it through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Functional Patterns coaching in Syracuse.

How is this different from physical therapy?

Physical therapy typically focuses on injury rehabilitation. Functional Patterns addresses the root cause of movement dysfunction — correcting the walking and running mechanics that underlie almost all human movement. The aim isn't just to treat symptoms, but to teach your body to move the way it was designed to. In working with the body as a whole, injury rehab becomes more effective and sustainable. This is why Functional Patterns is addressing issues such as severe scoliosis and mobility issues from Cerebral Palsy within its repertoire. See @fp.evidence on Instagram for more practice-based evidence of FP results.

Is Functional Patterns right for athletes?

Absolutely. Many athletes develop compensatory patterns that limit performance and increase injury risk. FP helps athletes move more efficiently, reducing energy waste and improving sport-specific output. Whether you're a weekend warrior or competitive athlete, optimising the foundational patterns benefits everything you do.

Is this suitable for seniors?

Yes — especially so. FP focuses on the movements you use every day: walking, standing, balancing. The system is scalable to any fitness level and helps maintain independence by improving strength, posture, and coordination. Many older clients see meaningful improvements within weeks.

How long until I see progress?

Most clients notice improvements in posture and movement awareness within the first few sessions. Significant changes in pain levels and movement quality typically show up within 4–8 weeks of consistent training, though everyone progresses at their own pace.

Where do sessions take place?

I am currently providing private sessions at 216 Fayette St, Manlius, NY 13104 (a shared space formally labeled as a Kumon Learning Center). Long-distance clients can train remotely via Zoom — head over to the contact page to book.
